The first service of the Longbranch Congregational
Church was held on Easter Sunday in 1908. This
two-story church overlooking Filucy Bay was
abandoned in 1939 when the foundation began sliding.
The lower level was named Penrose Hall for Dr. S B
L. Penrose, President of Whitman College. Dr.
Penrose served as Pastor during the summer months
while living at his beach home in Lakebay. The
congregation, Sunday School and Ladies Aid continued
to meet in the schoolhouse or gymnasium, and a
campaign for another church began.

The property for the present church was donated by
the Abe Rickert family. Dedication was in June 1948.
The Fellowship Hall was added in 1958. The Parish
House, which now serves as our Sunday School
classrooms, was donated by Mr. & Mrs. William Dafoe
in 1960. It had been their summer cabin on Filucy
Bay and was arrived by barge at high tide.
Rev. John Smirchich, the first pastor of the new
church, served both our church and the Lakebay
Church, as did Rev. Oster and Rev. DeBock until 1957
when it was voted to dis-continue with Lakebay. In
1958, Dr. Decker became our resident minister and
served until 1965. Other ministers included Rev.
Pruitt, Rev. Johnston, Rev. Van Horn, Chaplain
Tyler, Chaplain King, Rev. Ellis, Rev. Fukuyama, Dr.
David Suter, Rev. Wally Higbee, and Rev. Lowell
Torgerson.
Since March 1995, we have been most fortunate to
have Dr. Robert Olmsted as our Pastor. He and his
wife, Marjorie, live in Gig Harbor. Dr. Olmsted also
serves on the Council of the Presbytery of North
Puget Sound. Because of health reasons Dr. Olmsted
retired in April, 2003.
The Pastoral Search Committee began a search for a
new minister at that time with Dr. David Suter as
the interim minister. On August 15, 2004, Longbranch
Community Church called Rev. Bill Meyer to be minister. He and his wife Marilyn served
with us until 2005.
At present, we
have
Reverend Arlyce W. Kretschman, called into
service in January 2006.
The Longbranch Community Church was originated and
built by local people who had a commitment and a
dream of a place of worship in their community, and
it is still growing with the dedication and love of
members and friends. We are an inter-denominational
Protestant church, with members from several faiths
sharing worship and fellowship together. |
